About the Riedstras:Tom Riedstra began raising chinchillas in the 1950's. Tom had never heard about chinchillas before. After investigating the industry, market, and animals needs Tom decided this was for him. Investing one and a half months salary for two chinchillas was a huge risk for a struggling immigrant. This however was a very rewarding step. Over those years Tom grew and maintained a herd of about 200 animals (a very comfortable part time size). In 1978 Tom, with his son Greg, decided to get going in a very serious manner. By the early 1980's the Riedstra's managed the largest ranch in Canada, one of the largest in the world with over 5000 top quality chinchillas. Through time and focus on quality, the ranch grew in reputation and quality, winning many show prizes and much respect. Over the years Tom has contributed much to the industry as the Chairman of National Chinchilla Breeders of Canada, a Canadian and International Judge, a certified grader and much enjoyed trainer. Greg is recognized for his diverse contributions to the chinchilla industry. He has been president of various chinchilla groups as well as director of the Central Ontario Branch of NCBC for over 8 years. He has both locally and internationally lectured on animal husbandry, judged numerous chinchilla shows, conducted training seminars and contributed articles to chinchilla related publications. Recently Greg has completed a book Practical Chinchilla Ranching. Greg also is a fur specialist at North American Fur Auctions, an organization which markets chinchilla pelts. |
